Monterey Events

This policy explains what the Monterey Events iOS app collects, why it collects it, and how it is handled. We keep data collection to what the app needs to work. We do not sell your personal data. The app contains no advertising, no analytics, and no third-party tracking software of any kind.

Information we collect

• Your email address. You create an account by entering your email address and confirming a one-time code we send to it. This is the only way to sign in. We use your email address to identify your account, to send you sign-in codes, and to reply if you contact support. We do not use it for marketing.
• Profile information. A display name and, if you choose to set one, a profile photo. You may also tell the app which event categories you are interested in.
• Your activity in the app. The events you save, the events you RSVP to, and the comments you post on events and businesses.
• Approximate location. Only with your permission, and only while you are using the app. The app asks for coarse location — it is deliberately configured to roughly one-hundred-metre accuracy rather than precise positioning, because it only needs to know which part of the Peninsula you are in.
• A device token for notifications. If you turn on notifications, Apple issues the app a push token for your device, which we store so we can send you reminders about events you saved. It is not an advertising identifier and cannot be used to track you across apps.

We do not collect your contacts, your photo library, your camera, your microphone, your health data, or any advertising identifier. The app does not ask for permission to track you across other companies' apps or websites, because it never does.

How we use your information

• To create your account and keep you signed in.
• To show you events near you, sorted by distance, and to place them on the map.
• To save your events, record your RSVPs, and show your comments to other users.
• To send you notifications you asked for, and to add events to your calendar when you ask.
• To keep the service safe — reviewing reported content and acting on abuse.
• To respond to support requests you send us.

Permissions the app asks for

Every permission is optional. The app works without them, with the related feature switched off. iOS asks you before any of these are granted, and you can change your mind at any time in Settings.

• Location (while using the app). Used to sort events by distance and centre the map near you. When you have granted it, your approximate coordinates are sent with event requests so the service can return what is nearby. Location is never collected in the background, never stored as a movement history, never sold, and never used for advertising.
• Calendar (add events only). If you add an event to your calendar, the app writes that one event. It requests write-only access, so it cannot read your existing calendar or see anything else on it.
• Notifications. Used for reminders about events you saved. Declining them does not affect anything else.
• Choosing a profile photo. The app does not have access to your photo library. When you set a profile photo, iOS shows you its own picker and hands the app only the single image you chose. That image is uploaded to our storage and becomes your avatar.

Content you post

Comments you write on events and businesses are public to other people using the app, along with your display name and profile photo. Do not put anything in a comment that you would not want to be public. You can delete your own comments. You can also report a comment or block another user; reports are reviewed and acted on within 24 hours. Our Terms of Service set out the full content policy.

How your information is stored

• Your sign-in token is stored in the iOS Keychain on your device, the storage iOS provides for credentials.
• Your app preferences and your record of accepting our terms are stored on your device.
• Your account, profile, saved events, RSVPs, and comments are stored on the Monterey Events backend, which runs on Amazon Web Services in the United States. Uploaded profile photos are stored in our cloud storage and served over a content delivery network.
• If you use the home-screen widget, a copy of your saved events is placed in a private storage area shared between the app and its widget on your own device, so the widget can display them. That copy never leaves your device.

Sharing

We do not sell your personal data, and we do not share it with advertisers or data brokers. We do not use analytics or crash-reporting services. Your information is shared only with the infrastructure providers that run the service on our behalf — Amazon Web Services for hosting and storage, and Apple for delivering push notifications — and only to the extent needed to operate it. We may disclose information if we are legally required to, or where it is necessary to protect the safety of our users.

Your choices and rights

• Export your data. The app can give you a copy of your profile, saved events, RSVPs and preferences as a single file, from the app's settings.
• Delete your account. You can delete your account from within the app, in settings. This permanently removes your account and the personal data attached to it — saved events, RSVPs and preferences — from our backend. It cannot be undone. You can also email us and we will do it for you.
• Turn off permissions. Location, calendar and notification access can each be revoked at any time in the iOS Settings app.

Data retention

We keep your account and the information attached to it for as long as your account exists. When you delete your account, that data is deleted from our backend. Comments you posted may remain visible in a de-identified form where removing them would break the surrounding conversation. Records we are required to keep for legal or security reasons — such as abuse reports — may be retained longer. The sign-in token on your device is removed when you sign out or delete the app.

Security

Traffic between the app and our servers is encrypted in transit. Your sign-in token is held in the iOS Keychain rather than ordinary app storage. Requests for your own data are authorised from that token on the server, so one account cannot read another's. No system is perfectly secure, but we design for the smallest amount of data we can operate on.

Children

Monterey Events is not directed at children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If you believe a child has provided us information, please contact us and we will delete it.

Changes to this policy

If we update this policy, we will revise the effective date above. Continued use of the app after an update means you accept the revised policy.
